Has anyone changed the outside left outside door handle? Is the lock interchangable? How hard is this project ?

1999 Chev Suburban

Thanks

No, not on a 1999 Old Body style.

Yes.

Easy, just R & R the door panel, disconnect to lock rods, unclip the door lock cylinder, & reinstall.

I installed a pair of chrome handles on my '93 Sportside. If your '99 is the old body style it should be the same. The two hardest parts as I recall were getting the rods back into their sockets due to limited visibility and getting the handle to fit throught the opening in the outside of the door. With the levers and such on the handle it took some manipulation. I did this about 1-1/2 years ago, and can barely remember what I did yesterday, but that's how I seem to remember it.

I may be getting older but I refuse to grow up.

'99 Suburban - sold my '93 extra cab sportside

Another of our members just went through this fun recently:

https://www.chevytalk.org/fusionbb/showtopic.php?ti...

EDIT - I had posted that I figured we'd see more of this, especially with what I thought were the newer style handles with more plastic parts on them. I went to re-check some handles I worked on recently and discovered I was wrong. There IS a design (and probably supplier) change with the last few years of the door handles, though. I found this out when trying to replace some broken handles on a '98 and an "old body" one ton '99.

When installing handles from just a few years prior, still the same style with the grained metal handle, not the early "smooth" style, they would fit very loosely in the door opening. Checking a little closer shows the plastic bezel around the handle is larger on the new design. It's only larger by a few millimeters total, but enough to make a very obvious difference on the door. It's a completely unacceptable fit to use the older design handle on the newer door.

The new design seems more prone to breakage, maybe from thinner metal on the surrounding part of the handle, or less support due to the contact area with the door sheetmetal being almost purely plastic!

I suppose one could snip the larger plastic bezel away from their broken door handle and attempt to attach it to the older design, if you were so inclined.

Thanks for the replies. Guess I know what I'm doing this weekend. The handle I purchased is a "new style" handle. Someone mentioned " old body style" and "new body style". I was unaware there were different styles. What are the differences? Thanks.

Referring to the 99's, there is the body style like the bulk of the 88-98's and there is the 99 NBS----like you would expect to have a 5.3/4.8 engine. I would think by far, the largest production numbers are NBS for 99.

Kind of like in 2007, there was a truck that looked like a 2006 truck & a truck which looked like a 2008 truck does today.

Yep, as far as body styles go, in '99 the Tahoe and Suburban were the "old" body style just like the regular 1988-1998 trucks. The "new" body style pickup was available, the design that ran from '99-up, but there were also a number of "old" body style pickups (not SUV's) - typically the SUV's and one tons lag behind a year or two in body changes. '99 also saw the only crew cab short bed in the "old" body style.

And.........either that picture was taken quite awhile back or he's really taken care of it. Kudos to him

Quartlow - yes, since your old body style Suburban has everything in common with the 1988-1998 trucks, this is the place to be. Same body, same drivelines, same everything.

The rod from the back of the lock cylinder, to the tab sticking out from the latch? I leave it attached to the cylinder with the handle outside of the truck, then attach it to the latch once it's in. If you haven't removed the door module then you're fighting an uphill battle. With the door module out of the way, you've got a lot more access. Not total access, but a lot more.

The really tough one is getting the outside handle rod into the latch, since the rear window channel is in the way. That's the reason I drop the latch mechanism down, leave the handle rod attached, install the handle and then bring the latch up to the rod.
